Case 003 [Action/Voice] (Backdated to the afternoon of 4/20)

[Doctor's appointments are a little bit like dating. You give someone all your information, they tell you to take off your clothes, and sometimes you end up with a hand shoved inside you.

...That's a bit of an exaggeration, actually. So where did the musing that they're similar come from? The fact that one arranges to meet at a certain time on a certain day, and there is an unspoken expectation of maintaining that commitment--or at least calling ahead of time to cancel. That was courteous.

So in a way, this was like being stood up. But Muraki doesn't wither in the burning heat of rejection. He sits next to an empty bed, smiling a restrained smile as he pulls the top off a pen and replaces it multiple times.

After an appropriate amount of silence, he flips his journal open and makes an entry.]

Sheik? This is Doctor Muraki speaking. I seem to recall setting an appointment with you for eleven forty-five this morning, and it is now twelve-thirty...ah. [He checks the time.] My apologies, one in the afternoon. I just wanted to check in and make sure everything is all right. I hope nothing happened to you or your loved ones.

I would also like to reschedule. If you're not in literal pieces right now, or otherwise incapacitated, please respond back as soon as possible. Thank you.

I will come. Tell me when. [You can hear the sulk in his voice.]

[He looks at the time again.] How does four-thirty sound to you?

...Will you be at home for the rest of the day, Sheik?

I was not planning to stay. [A pause, then a sigh.] Would you rather I did, doctor?

I don't want to interfere with your plans, but I recommend that you take it easy. Can you do that for me?

[...Fine.] Yes.

[Frustrate! He actually had plans today. ...Appointment avoiding plans, but plans nonetheless.]

Excellent. Then I will see you at four-thirty.

Take care of yourself, Sheik. [And then he closes his journal.]

[Of course, Muraki set up that appointment as a diversion to trick Sheik into staying home. He already fooled him once, and he wouldn't stand to be fooled again.

Muraki did what he had to for his patients.

He walks up to the residence with a bag of medical supplies and a jaunty little smile. A happy tune even bubbles in his throat, wanting to be hummed. But he holds it back, adjusts the knot of his tie and knocks on the door.]

[There's faint music coming from inside. Sheik seems to have taken the suggestion to take it easy to heart, and he's visible from the window, curled up in his chair with his lyre. At the knock, his song halts abruptly and he looks up. What...?]

[Sheik opens the door, sees who's there, and promptly turns away, leaving the door open.]

Why are you here?

[This doesn't faze Muraki in the slightest--if anything, he sees the silver lining in the fact that Sheik didn't slam the door in his face. He follows him into his home as if it was completely normal for doctors to plan sneak attacks on their patients.]

We have an appointment, remember?

This was my guarantee that you wouldn't stand me up a second time.

I was not going to miss it. [Not after that entry, meaning his entire family knows he skipped out, which also means everyone is going to scold him for doing so.]

[He heads down the hall, to his (depressingly empty) room, expecting that Muraki would follow. Better to not do this in the middle of the living room, in case people come home looking for him.]

[His eyebrow lifts into his forehead, though Sheik's back is turned to him and he can't appreciate his sarcasm as they walk down the hallway.] So you were.

...Unfortunately, you damaged my trust, Sheik. [Sunny smile says otherwise.] As much as it pains me to deceive you, I have a duty to take care of my patients. Surely you understand.

No, I do not understand. [Even though he kind of really does. It's not much different than his responsibilities as a father.]

[He sits down on his bed, finally facing Muraki. Okay, get this over with, why don't you?]

[He shrugs--a fluid shift of his shoulder blades.] I don't suppose it matters if you do.

[As Sheik sits down on the bed, he pulls a chair and sets his bag down. Then he opens it, taking out a few things at once: a stethoscope, which he drapes around his neck. A pair of latex gloves, which he snaps on with well-practiced ease, and a tongue blade that he brandishes like a magic wand as he inches closer to Sheik.] You know the drill. Open your mouth and say 'ah.'

[Sheik makes a small disgusted face before doing what he's told. Always so invasive, these checkups. It doesn't make him terribly happy.]

[He shoves the tongue blade into Sheik's mouth with a little more force than usual--one last bit of passive-aggressive punishment before he gets down to business.

Pulling a tiny flashlight out of his coat pocket, he shines it down Sheik's throat and checks for inflation or discharge. No ulcers or white patches either as he examines the buccal folds and under Sheik's tongue. He hums and removes the wooden stick.] Do you have anything to report?

[So, so invasive. Ugh. He gags softly and shakes his head.] I feel fine.

[Ignoring the gagging sound he makes, he sets his tools down in order to press his fingertips to Sheik's neck and examines it.] No aches or pains or abnormalities of any kind?

No, Doctor. [Just listen to that irritation. He's in a mood today.] She is unhappy about the shift, but that is normal. [For the both of them, really.]

We will address that in a moment. [He stands up and encourages Sheik to sit with his back facing him and tilts his head forward.] ...This will cause some discomfort, just so you know. [But he doesn't give him that much time to brace himself before he digs his fingers underneath his sternomastoid muscle.]

[Ow, ow. Sheik hisses softly and glowers at his knees. Okay, he gets it. He'll behave, now enough with the unpleasant treatment!]

...What is it you are looking for?

[Muraki doesn't react to Sheik's pain, though his maliciousness has completely drained from his thoughts. It couldn't be helped. If he became preoccupied with coddling his patients and steering them away from painful procedures, he couldn't do his job. And chances were his patients would die: a little pain was better than death. But when he's finished, he brushes his fingers over Sheik's throat in a vague apology before withdrawing.]

It's just a routine check-up, Sheik. I'm making sure you're not showing early signs of disease and everything is normal--well, normal for you anyway. [He takes his stethoscope and fits the buds in his ears.] If you would be so kind as to lift your shirt and take a deep breath...

[Sheik glances back at Muraki.] It was not necessary to say so. I am not completely abnormal.

[Sulk. Lifting his shirt anyway. He half thought about taking it completely off, but if Muraki isn't doing anything else, he didn't really see the need. Breathing, cold stethoscope. To him, it's like a horrible pattern he can't ever escape.]

[There isn't time to answer him as Sheik does what he was told to do. Muraki puts the conversation on hold to listen to his lungs swell with air, and then deflate. He replies as soon as he's finished.]

...I'm not fond of the word, 'normal.' It's horribly relative, and many people will tell you that it doesn't exist outside of a society's standards of what its people should conform to.

[He shifts to sit in front of Sheik, his eyes trained on his chest.] Only in medicine is normality truly relevent. A swollen lymph node is abnormal; so is hearing the voice of a separate, female entity--don't speak yet. [He cuts him off so he can press the stethoscope against his sternum.]

[Muraki can probably hear the beginning of a response rumble in Sheik's chest before he goes quiet. Sheik doesn't much like that scrutiny, though. He's started to be a bit on the self-negligent side again, and it's starting to show in how thin he's looking.]

[He waits quietly for permission to speak again.]

[As Muraki moves the chest piece a few inches above Sheik's left nipple, he takes the opportunity to eyeball him and notes that he looks a little malnourished through the steady 'lub dub' of his heartbeat. He makes a note that he will have to weigh him when they get to the clinic.

At the very least, his heart rate was normal. He checks his abdomen for irregular bowel sounds before taking the stethoscope out of his ears and looks up.] You were saying?
